Bleed Edge Printing

What is bleed edge printing

“BLEED” is printer Tech Talk for images, patterns and designs that go right to the edge of the paper (they “bleed off the edge”). Machines can’t actually print to the very edge of paper because they need room to grip and transport the paper. The secret is to print on a larger size piece of paper and cut off the extra

How do I print to the edge of the page

Finished size A5 is usually printed on an A4 sheet and trimmed down
Finished size A4 is usually printed on an A3 sheet and trimmed down
Finished size A3 is usually printed on an SRA3 sheet and trimmed down

How do get rid of the white border on my printed page

Add a minimum of 3mm bleed ( extra image ) on all sides of your design. This will be trimmed off after your page has been printed. This ensures your document will show no white lines or borders on your page.

Paper Weight, GSM, and Thickness

Weight

Paper weight is measured in Grams per Square Metre (gsm).

Some common weights for comparison:

Carbonless form paper = 60gsm
Standard bond paper = 80gsm
Business Card stock = 300 - 400gsm

Thickness

Paper thickness is called “caliper” and is measured in micrometres.
Though gsm is weight, not thickness, it is usually a rough indicator that one stock is thicker than another. 300gsm card is usually always thicker than 80gsm paper. But some stocks are compressed, so it is possible to have a 250gsm stock that is thinner than a 200gsm stock.

Product Guide

Letterhead:

100g quality bond  is the standard stock used for letterheads. Quality, economical, no curl and  the most reliable stock to use when overprinted in most printers and copiers

Quality satin or gloss art paper in weights including 150g & 170g provide a more luxurious feel and reduced curl when handled. 150gsm is an optimun weight to use for durability

Print File Information

What FILE TYPES do you accept?
PDF, EPS, TIF, JPG, PNG, DOC/DOCX, PUB

PDF is preferred for printing - PDF freezes your document and locks in the fonts.

EPS and TIFF are appropriate if we create artwork from pieces you supply.

JPGs (jpeg) compress by throwing away detail, are often fuzzy and have jaggy edges.
Suitable for photos only, Not appropriate for logos.

We can print from DOC, DOCX, PUB (MS Word and Publisher files), but these files rebuild themselves every time they are opened. Images jump, pages break in strange spots, fonts drop out. Make a PDF instead. MS Office 2007 onwards allows saving as a PDF. OpenOffice has a built-in PDF maker, and we sell the allBIZ PDF Wiz for $9.95.

TIFs should be made with LZW compression (this compresses for a smaller file but does not degrade the image).

If I have the “wrong” format, can I change it to the type you want?

No. It's physically possible to change formats, but it won't help. The original format won't have the detail and info we need.

Should I put my logo and/or images into a Word document for you?

No. Give us the images as images, by themselves. Word docs mangle images.

Can I send you heaps and heaps of files?

Send one complete file if possible. This makes your job run faster, and you avoid expensive file handling fees. Every time a file has to be downloaded / opened / processed, it costs you money. Charges apply to handle 3 or more file.

What if my job really requires heaps of files?

If multiple files are absolutely necessary, send them as one “package” in a ZIP (compressed) file. There still will be some file handling fees, but the one package will be easier to handle than lots of individual files, and you will save money. Contact our print team and ask about our file mamgement services.

What size should my files be?

It depends on what file type and how it will be used. But a very rough, general rule for images is, they shouldn't be smaller than 500kb. An average digital photo is between 1mb and 3mb, depending on the camera and settings. These print well in different ways. Smaller files will be fuzzy and jaggy.

A 25kb file taken from the the web looks good on screen, but cannot print well.

If your total file size/package is more than 5mb, use www.wetransfer.com to send the files. It is a free service and allows up to 2Gb of data. File bigger than 5mb may not leave your email server, and if they do, they may not make it to ours.

Screen colours V Print colours ?

Screen colours (RGB) are not the same as printed colours (CMYK), and are only APPROXIMATE. They will look different on different monitors, and different again to what is actually printed.

Print Proofing

Print proofing

allBIZ prefer to proof all work for safety. Work not proofed is at your risk. allBIZ is not responsible for any errors or omissions for work that has not been proofed.

Prepress proof: An approximation of the finished product, to check the accuracy of the print & layout. Prepress proofing is a cost effective way to provide a visual copy of the job to be printed. A prepress proof can only approximate the colour & finish of a print job.

A prepress proof can be a soft copy (an electronic file), or a hard copy (a print). allBIZ supply soft proofs as emailed PDFs, and hard proofs as prints on 100gsm satin stock in CMYK colour.

A prepress proof is a visual check, but is not printed on the same equipment as the final job, and is not finished (cut / folded/ scored, etc.). It is useful to see, but it is not a sample of the actual job. There may be slight variations (colour, stock etc.) between a visual check and the actual finished product.

Prepress proof PRICE: $16.50 per proof (up to 2 A3 pages)

Press proof: A sample of the actual job from the actual production machine. A press proof is the job. It usually includes all finishing (cutting / folding / scoriong, etc.). Because of the setup involved and the interruption caused to our production queue, a press proof can be very expensive.

Press proof PRICE: starts at $22.00 and is charged per proof, quoted per job.

Author’s changes and errors:

Authors are responsible for their own alterations and / or errors, such as but not limited to: technical, typographical, design, layout or art creation.

We provide free print guides & information on bleed, trim, colour, size etc.

Your job should be triple-checked before bringing it to print. A print proof is a printing check, and not the time to make changes.

Please always allow adequate time to thoroughly check all proofs.

Proof Prices:

Standard visual proof hard copy full colour 100g satin stock, single sided up to A3 size including up to 2 printed pages $16.50 per proof

Standard visual proof soft copy full colour emailed or web supplied $16.50 per proof

Press proof full colour printed on the actual print machine  from $22.00. Press proofing will be quoted per Job.

Proofs are charged per proof, as required. Multiple proofs will each incure a cost.
